5 Reasons Your Gearbox Warranty May Be Rendered Void

If you’ve had your gearbox repaired or replaced, it’s important to make sure you don’t do anything that might jeopardise its warranty. Even things that seem small, like forgetting to lubricate and missing prescribed checks, can result in a voided warranty.

To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, here are some of the most common reasons people’s warranties are voided:

1. Missing the Prescribed Check

If you’ve had a new gearbox or clutch fitted then your mechanic may wish to have it checked after a specific amount of usage, which will usually be 500 miles. If you encounter any issues with your gearbox shortly after this and you didn’t have it checked then your warranty may be rendered void due to neglecting your responsibility for the health of your new gearbox installation.

2. Incorrect Fittings

Another reason your gearbox warranty may be rendered void is if there’s been an incorrect fitting or if a unit has been set up incorrectly. For instance, if you have issues with your gearbox and take it to the original installer but the issues are as a result of another mechanic’s faulty repair works then the original warranty is likely to be rendered void.

3. Failures External to the Unit

If there are any gearbox failures caused by parts that aren’t supplied with the original gearbox unit then you may find your warranty voided. For example, if you’ve had any non-original prop shafts, driveshafts, clutches, linkages, coolers or pipes fitted and they begin to cause problems for your gearbox then it’s highly unlikely the warranty will hold.

4. Lubricant Issues

It’s crucial that your gearbox is lubricated properly, not just because you could have your gearbox warranty voided but because it can cause significant damage to other areas of your car if you don’t. If you don’t adequately lubricate regularly, your gears will be damaged by excessive friction with other components or corrosion from exposure to water, as well as the impacts of high and low temperatures. Lubrication better protects your gearbox from all of these, which is why it’s often a reason for warranties being rendered void.

5. Incorrect Maintenance

Another key reason why your gearbox warranty may be rendered void is if it hasn’t been maintained properly by its owner. There’s a long list of ways you can damage your gearbox and these include drive errors, riding the clutch, bumpy starting, excessively heavy loads, accidental damage, and leaving your car parked in gear. All of these are avoidable which is why they’re usually reasons for a voided warranty.
